Setting Up Screen Lock for Android

Setting Up Screen Lock for Android

The Apple-Samsung war over mobile devices was in full swing for seven long years. During this period, both manufacturers fought tooth and nail in a war that involved cameras, battery settings, app stores, and hardware specs. The mudslinging was endless, with each throwing their own not-so-well-disguised jabs at the other.

Although the war is on hiatus, it brought about speedy development in both platforms, especially when it comes to security and increased adoption of mobile devices. As a result, more people go online using smartphones than desktop computers.

In this article, we’ll focus on Android which has a more significant market share — 73% to be more precise.

The lock screen is the most basic option when it comes to Android security. According to survey conducted in 2017, about 28% of Americans did not secure their Android devices. This is definitely where you want to start.

Setting Up Screen Locks

All setups we will go through will begin from the settings screen on your phone and move into the security menus. So for the succeeding setups, please do start from there. Don’t worry; we provided screenshots below.

Just a quick disclaimer. Depending on the type of phone you have, you might see different variations in your settings.

Option 1. From the main Settings Menu, click Security and Privacy and click the lock screen password option. The screenshots below also apply to the new Android Pie 9 update.

Once you reach this screen, you will see the Change lock screen menus below. If you click the first option, you will be asked for a lock screen password. Be patient, as it will ask for this three times, one for the password and twice for your pin.

Although many see the red font in the Set new password screen, few heed its advice. Do make sure you enter in a pin you can remember, otherwise you will be locked out of your phone.

Once you are done setting up the password and pin, you will be automatically brought back to the Lock screen password menu.

Option 2 and 3. On some phones, the lock screen password can be easily accessed from the main settings menu. Again, this is largely dependent on the type of phone you have and the launcher that you are using. The screenshots below take a page from the Vivo line, but other operating systems have similar features.

One thing you will notice as you go through the slides is that there are two options for the lock, namely the screen lock and the privacy and software lock. This is similar to what the Android 9 does, except in the 9 you see the options on the same screen.

Here you don’t have the opportunity to choose different locks, but you can choose if you want the lock to be enabled for both your screen and software.

There you go. Simple and easy screenshots to help you set up the most basic security. Stay tuned for other walkthroughs on our site.
