Buying Guide

How to buy a 4k projector for home?

Are you drooling to bring home a 4K projector? But do you have in-depth knowledge about the 4K projector? Well, buying a 4K projector may seem easy chore due to a limited number of models, but in reality, things are entirely different. Suppose you want to buy a cheap 4k projector (if you don’t have enough budgets). There are a lot of things you will have to keep in mind while you are about to buy a 4K projector for home. Do you know all those considerations? If you don’t, we have meticulously laid those factors for you so that you can easily understand them and find the right 4K model.

Here is the list of all the crucial considerations;

Getting the right 4K resolution

Finding true 4K resolution is difficult as most of the manufacturer uses low-resolution chips and a modern enhancement to create 4K resolution (3840 X 2160). Although there are models that use 4K chips to create 8.3million pixel on screen 3840 X 2160 isn’t the correct 4K resolution. 4K Enhancement technology and e-shift5 4K precision sit in the pinnacle of enhancement tricks where they use full HD chips to create a 4K resolution. These 4K projectors are affordable, and they provide an excellent output of any 4K content on the screen.

However, if you want to get the taste of correct 4K resolution, then you will have to look for models which offer 4096 X 2160 as native resolution. As a casual viewer, you won’t find much difference when you look at the true 4K resolution and regular 4K resolution. Projectors with 3840 X 2160 or 4096 X 2160 (except models with enhancements) produce lifelike visual quality with high frame rate and excellent colour performance. So the choice of resolution entirely depends upon your visual requirement and content availability (most of the 4K contents doesn’t offer true 4K).

Display Technology

Well, if you want to get the best quality out of your 4K contents, SXRD projection technology should be your best bait. But they are quite expensive, and it is only available in a few models of Sony. However, three single-chip DMD in 4K DLP projectors serves as a good alternative as they bring out an amazing 3840 X 2160 with top-notch colour accuracy and clarity. Even though it offers tremendous visual quality for movies and games, but it yields poor output for data images.

Another good option that you should consider is 4K LCD technology that uses LCD chips along with colour wheel to create a 4K resolution. The output quality is good, but it isn’t as good as SXRD or 4K DLP.

HDR Availability

Having HDR support in your 4K projector can prove fruitful as takes the 4K resolution to the next level. 4K projectors with HDR 10 or 10+ support brings out fine detailing, exceptional contrast, wide colour coverage, rich highlight and deep black in ever visual. Watching movies in 4K HDR will be a treat to your eye as you will watching theatre-like optical output at your home comfort. The number of 4K HDR content is quite less now, but the number will increase in the coming years.

Lumens Rating

Getting a projector with excellent lumens rating is a significant task as you won’t love to see 4K movies or videos in poor brightness. It would be futile to see dimmed or foggy 4K visuals after investing a good chunk on your projector. So if you are planning to install the projector in a dark or semi-dark room with little light interruption, then your minimum threshold limit should be 2000 ANSI but not less. However for the ideal brightness despite the light condition in the room, we would suggest you search for models around 3000 ANSI lumens.

Contrast Ratio and Color

In addition to lumens, another two critical factors that dominate the output of a 4K projector is contrast ratio and colour accuracy. A poor contrast ratio figure with low colour accuracy will result in a reasonably flat production whose quality is weaker than a 720p resolution. So make sure that your targeted 4k projector for the home should have at least 10000:1 contrast ratio and above 90% coverage of colour gamut as it will correctly reproduce the 4K content. Also, look for colour technologies in your projector as they significantly boost the colour output by bringing out most of the colours from the material content.

Lamp Life

Lamp life is a big concern when it comes to 4K projectors as most of them offer poor lamp longevity. As 4K models consume requires high lumens and energy, so the lamp tends to die faster. The lamp used in most of the 4K models are quite expensive, and it is not easy for everyone to replace it every year. So it would be great to look for models with minimum 8000hour longevity as it will save money as well as hassle. However, if you are someone who is looking for a low cost of ownership, then we would suggest you search for models around 15000hour longevity.

Screen Size and Throw Ratio

Although in most of the 4K projectors you will find a widescreen size range, not all offer a full clear screen size. Apparent screen size is that range which yields out the best clarity, quality, and colour. The ideal screen size range is considered to be 50-130inch, but it entirely depends upon the model you are choosing.

The throw ratio on the other serves as an essential aspect, and if you go for a wrong throng ratio, then you will have to compromise on the screen size, installation space, and quality. For instance, if you have are planning to keep the projector in a small room or apartment, then always look short ultra-short throw ratio as it can comfortably project a large image from a little distance. However, if space is not an issue for you, then having a 4K projector with a standard throw ratio would be a good option.
